Where is everybody? This was precisely the question on my mind Sunday night, back in the city after a weekend covering parties in the Hamptons. True, this year's social season out there has proven to be rather unexciting, but I had thought my glitzy itinerary -- a Dior Beauty dinner Friday night followed by the annual Super Saturday sale the next afternoon -- promised to buck that trend. This would be the weekend the party people came out.
Still, I kept my hopes high for Super Saturday. After all, heavy hitters like Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren have attended the annual benefit in years past.
But with the exception of a select few stylish women like Christy Turlington and Kelly Ripa, the step-and-repeat was glutted with reality stars (including two of New York's "Real Housewives") and incongruous shoppers like Kelsey Grammer and ThalÃa. Even Donna Karan, who underwrote the event, was otherwise occupied in Africa.
So, what gives? If the so-called bargains at Super Saturday were any indication (Marc Jacobs handbags were marked down to $800 from $1,465), "everybody" just might be shopping the 60-percent-off sale rack at Barneys New York.
