"We started with leathers mainly and it was always my intention to have a full collection," said Denise Focil of her eponymous line. "I always wanted it to be a well-rounded collection that offered everything for a woman, from a leather jacket to the silk top or dress to go underneath it."
The spring 2011 collection still centers around leather jackets, these being buttery soft leather in feminine styles, but adds a romantic twist with the introduction of silk tops and dresses. The silk pieces that used to add a small girly touch here and there are now a staple of the collection.
The designer added, "I really feel that women in general, we are very complex and have so many different sides. Even in the toughest girl there's a very feminine soft sexy woman who's vulnerable. And I love that our line encompasses that duality now; I like a tough girl that has a soft edge."
Focil says she takes many of her cues from her love of music, citing Karen Elson and Alison Mosshart of The Kills as inspirations. For the spring collection however, she drew from her travels, particularly the idea of Parisian street style. "I watch people everywhere I go. I love how they mix it up."
The collection, which counts Blake Lively, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst and Whitney Port as fans, retails from $119 to $550.
