Miguel Adrover greets you like a stranded man on an island might -- limbs flailing, wide smile, waist-length scraggly hair -- and you can't help but share his sense of urgency.
The sleepy Mediterranean island of Majorca is home but he seems determined to prove himself once again in New York. Come Sept. 7, he will show off his signature collection for Hess Natur, a $100 million, 30-year-old German mail order label with unbelievably, environmentally friendly practices. Adrover readily admits he is over the catwalk, tardy designers, celebrity-heavy fashion shows and overpriced disposable clothes. "For me, the big challenge is leaving my home and getting the opportunity to show in the city where I grew up and got my support."
This fall's downtown gathering will be artistically-infused for 800 to see. But he plans to figure out a way for anyone who wants to see the collection to be able to down-the-road. This all-are-welcome approach smacks at fashion show's elitism, but then again Adrover has made a name for himself by being himself.
After a meteoric rise to the top of the fashion heap via wacky runway antics (a runaway black sheep, appropriated logos, mattress ticking and the like), Adrover packed up his Chrystie Street apartment and called it quits four years ago. Since that time, he bounced around to see more of the world, even driving a horse taxi for a few months in Egypt for a few months. Back in his homeland, he and a bunch of artists built a a coffee shop/bar that shows documentary films and has art exhibitions and stage readings. There, he likes nothing better than chewing the fat with the locals about what interests or troubles them. The bar's name, Esjac, is a Spanish word that describes the indentation left in any given surface after an animal or person has taken a nap. Could that be more fitting?
