Tanzania is one of my favorite destinations to go to for a reprieve and inspiration.

Whenever I arrive in the Serengeti and see the vast openness of the fields, I’m always dumbstruck. It feels like it’s the closest thing to God’s country. I’m in awe of the animals roaming in abundance.

The Masai tribes, who have lived here for hundreds of years, live off the land and seem unbothered by the fact that they have not engaged in Western civilization. At all. Their native garb is incredibly colorful, regal and, considering that they have no washing machines, completely immaculate.

I stayed with And Beyond, which runs safari lodges throughout Africa. You can get used to traveling around watching the animals, waking up at six in the morning going on a safari, and then ending the day at a lodge like the Ngorongoro Crater, which fuses traditional Masai culture with the opulence of Versailles. It seems like an impossible combination but somehow they nailed it.

In a way, it feels like Gaudí’s dream...tucked away in the woods.
