With all the honors being handed out around town these days, New Yorkers have been spending spring by stepping out and stepping up to the podium.

Robert Altman was feted with a giant Film Society of Lincoln Center Tribute at Avery Fisher Hall the other night, and the tented affair afterward at Tavern on the Green was as grand and splashy as any Hollywood event, with lots of movie stars, champagne and glam duds.

Most of the stars went all out for Altman -- Lauren Bacall even purchased a new navy silk Armani outfit. But not Tim Robbins.

"I'm wearing the leftovers from 'Hudsucker Proxy,"' he said with a laugh.

And while Altman was being treated as though larger than life, he is now a shadow of his former self, having gone overboard dieting to fit into designer clothes during the filming of "Pret-A-Porter."

Earlier that same night, Elizabeth Rohatyn was given one of the highest honors a volunteer worker can get: She had an award named after her.

Rohatyn, a standout in a white Bill Blass column, helped hand out the first annual Elizabeth Rohatyn Community Service Awards at Sotheby's to individuals who helped out the Lenox Hill Neighborhood House.

"I think I can count on one hand the number of Glorious Food dinners I've sat down to," said award-winner Sean Driscoll, whose company catered the affair. "I don't like it; it makes me nervous."

When Rohatyn's daughter, Nina Griscom, showed up in a revealing black lace number also by Bill Blass, the designer remarked, "I dress the whole family; it's cheaper that way."

A few nights earlier, Evelyn Lauder and Matilda Cuomo were among those honored by the Knicks Wives for their help in fighting breast cancer.

"There's always been a lot of crossover between fashion and art and other areas for causes," said Chris Riley, wife of Knicks head coach Pat Riley. "It's time we got sports involved."

Lauder said she has several projects forthcoming that will aid in the fight against the disease -- one of them being an Estee Lauder counter promotion in the U.S., Canada and Puerto Rico. "But I won't tell you what it is because I don't want anyone else to do it -- unless they give me the money."
