After their glittering party at the Regent Wall Street to celebrate the June wedding in Caracas of their daughter Carolina to Alberto Rodriguez-Diez, Patty and Gustavos Cisneros, the glamorous Venezuelan power couple, flew off to Canada to stay with Jackie and Paul Desmarais, the glamorous Canadian power couple, at their farflung hunting lodge. Also part of the shooting party were Emilia and Pepe Fanjul, the glamorous Cuban power couple who are very much together at the moment. But you knew that.

The Cisneros party was a kind of lovely private extravaganza seldom seen in New York anymore. Now, tickets in hand, those who are and those who consider themselves social are left to drown in a sea of charity galas of incredible sameness. The 500 guests — old, medium and many young, all beautifully dressed and bejeweled — danced away the night to the Sammy Goz Orchestra, imported from Paris. But the big hit of the evening were the mariachis who played from the Regent’s two soaring balconies as the crowd cheered.

The local ladies who are forever best dressed didn’t disappoint, going all out in killer couture, but it was the cast of young people, many from South America, that drew raves. The family emeralds, rubies, sapphires and diamonds sparkled from North American and South American throats, ears, wrists, fingers. No bellybutton jewelry, please. It wasn’t that kind of a party.

Next to the stunning bride, Princess Firyal of Jordan was considered best of show. La Firyal, always Paris-clad, outshone herself at the party, and her nonstop necklace didn’t hurt either. Other standouts were Nada Kirdar, the wife of the international financier, and Carolina Herrera.

Some of the exuberant "kids" didn’t leave until four in the morning disproving the old saying that youth is too good to waste on them.

Pamela Gross, the wife of publisher Jimmy Finkelstein, is jumping for joy — well, not really because that would be sort of awkward — about expecting her first baby next week. She is thrilled to be having a boy and she is still selecting names from baby books. Perri Peltz, Deborah Norville and Carol Mack will give her a baby shower today at Doubles and among those expected bearing gifts are Kimberly Rockefeller and Arriana von Hohenlohe Boardman. Actually, there will be three showers for Pamela in three days given by such as Vera Wang and Katharina Otto for her friends including Pilar Crespi, Joanne de Guardiola, Bettina Zilkha, Serena and Samantha Boardman, Debbie Bancroft, Karen LeFrak, Allison Stern and Prince Dimitri of Yugoslavia, who is one of the baby’s godfathers. Dear Pamela should be careful not to get ribbon burns opening all of her presents.
