Style Session with Amanda Brooks

If you ask Amanda Brooks how she came to write a sartorial advice book, she will happily tell you that there was a time when she had no real sense of style.

In her new book, "I [heart] Your Style," Amanda Brooks does everything from referring to the masters—Slim Aarons, Diana Vreeland—to doling out tips like "Embrace yourself and your history." Yet if you ask her how she came to write a book filled with sartorial advice, she will happily tell you that there was a time when she had no real sense at all of how she should dress. The first time she was in Vogue, she says, she wore a Tracey Feith dress she bought at Calypso. This was back when she was in her early 20s, before she became the muse and creative director of Tuleh. She had just started dating her husband and as she said, "I had a really bad haircut, so I slicked it back."

In fact, she added, talking at a book signing party Wednesday night at her friend Diane von Furstenberg’s store, it wasn’t until she got married and began having children that she really found her own sense of how she she should dress. "It was an evolution," she said. "I began to trust my own instincts when I began to fullfill my own dreams. I know that sounds corny but it’s true."

Now, she has a book, inspires designers, and gets feted by the head of the CFDA. Said von Furstenberg, as guests like Hamish Bowles, Josh Patner, and Amy Astley plunked down $19.95 for their friend’s new book, "I met Amanda because she dated my son at one point. She’s always effortless, a little bit WASP-y and a little bohemian, but mostly herself."
