But how about 2002? Urban DJs around the country say competition between the top contenders is fierce.
Tiffany Green of WGCI Chicago is torn between "Two Wrongs," a duet by Wyclef Jean and City High songstress Claudette and "Call" by Ashanti. "It feels like you're driving with the top down and you're cruising with your man," she says of the latter.
But in Los Angeles, Cliff Winston of KJLH has fallen for P. Diddy's new album, "We Invented the Remix." Any song could be "the one," he says, though "I Need A Girl" leads the pack.
"It's so light and breezy, it's like getting off a plane in the Bahamas," says Winston. Second runner-up? "Land of Million Drums" by Outkast, a new tune from the "Scooby-Doo" soundtrack.
New York's own Sunny, of HOT 97, says it's easy-to-understand lyrics, not just a snappy sound, that make a summer tune memorable. So far she's heard a lot of requests for P. Diddy's "I Need a Girl," and for the ladies she picks "Addictive" by Truth Hurts. "He's so contagious, he turns my pages / He's got me anxious, he's what I waited for / He keeps me guessin', spontaneous / He's so persuasive, and I'm his lady."
