There may be quakes and there may be blizzards, but you can't keep Angelenos or New Yorkers down.

The L.A. party for Ajay Sahgal and his new, novel "Pool" was the hot spot the other evening, with hundreds jamming into a suite at the Chateau Marmont. A few nights later, when Morgan Entrekin and Bret Easton Ellis toasted Sahgal in New York, MercBar was the hot place -- or the cold one, anyway. Ellis didn't take his coat off in the drafty night spot and neither did George Plimpton, who scoffed at staying home. What a hard-core crowd. Sahgal said it took him 30 hours to wing in from L.A.

Back on the shaky coast, the American Cinema Awards brought out a mix of young and old -- Angie Dickinson and Tony Bennett, Michael Keaton and Evander Holyfield -- all talking quake damage and mud slides. OK, back to east coast adversity. At Claudia Ruspoli's dinner party for Bottega Veneta at Doubles, the crowd was downright adventurous about the cold. "I can't believe I'm dressed like this," said Fran Lebowitz of her duck boots. "But only people who have a car and driver can afford not to dress like this." Egon Von Furstenberg must have gotten a lift, because he didn't have a hair out of place-- unlike daughter Tatiana.

Across town, where Ross Bleckner helped host a Chinese New Year party to benefit the Community Research Initiative on AIDS, Nina Griscom didn't let her broken toe keep her down; she left tablemate Jock Soto after dinner to cut up the dance floor. The gala was also to launch Asja, Fendi's new perfume, and Silvia Fendi was there, hosting because aunt Carla had taken ill. The next night, the place to be was the Metropolitan Museum, where Crown Prince Frederik, showed up to inaugurate an exhibition of Danish paintings. Leave it to a great Dane to ignore the cold.
