In an age when celebrity stylists and rent-a-commentators have descended vulture like onto avant-guarde sartorialists, the annual benefit for Robert Wilson’s Watermill Center has emerged as something of a fashion safe space.
This year, drag queens walked the lawn in eight inch stilettos and bodysuits that covered their entire faces. A woman in a black vinyl raincoat walked across a a dinner table with an umbrella. Every few minutes, a man in a business suit would come up from behind her and dump a bucket of water on her. The singer Rufus Wainwright was milling around in a lime green suit from Viktor and Rolf with no shirt on underneath. “I think older people are far more adventurous with their clothing choices these days,” he said. “That’s what’s great about this benefit. It’s old and young, and people wear whatever they want.”
Others seen at the benefit were Kim Cattrall, Jay McInerney, Anne Hearst, Bob Colacello, Hope Atherton, Fabiola Beracasa, Howard Stern, Beth Ostrosky, and Jessica Joffe.
