Sunny Los Angeles has famously inspired suspicion in many hard-boiled New Yorkers. But Saturday night, the two coasts seemed to happily coexist as Manhattan's Opening Ceremony celebrated its new Los Angeles boutique, where Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte, Jeremy Scott, Rilo Kiley lead singer Jenny Lewis, Visionaire's Cecilia Dean and skateboarding pioneer Tony Alva all cheerfully mingled.

"All my friends in New York told me I had to come to the store, and it's really rad," enthused rocker Karen O.

The party shifted to nightclub Echoplex, where Jefferson Hack and Grey Ant designer Grant Krajecki watched as actor Leo Fitzpatrick and artist Brian DeGraw manned the turntables. Their string of Smiths songs got Lewis on the dance floor, though she lamented her choice of footwear. "If I had a bigger purse, I would have brought some flats," she said. Meanwhile, the late arrival of Drew Barrymore and Spike Jonze had necks straining, though the actress herself was nonchalant. "I just picked this up off the floor and put it on," she admitted of her short silk frock with sequined shoulder patches.

The night before, an artsy crowd gathered near the UCLA campus to catch a preview of curator Emi Fontana's third installation in her "West of Rome" series — all part of L.A. Art weekend. Fontana collaborated with T. Kelly Mason and Diana Thater to build a mirrored room in a former bridal shop, and on the walls, a video of a band covering the Buzzcocks' punk tune "Why Can't I Touch It" was projected. Watching from the second-floor balcony were a veritable museum's worth of curators: the Whitney Museum's Shamim Momin, the Hammer Museum's Sarah Stifler and Los Angeles County Museum of Art director Michael Govan, who had brought the missus, Louis Vuitton's Katherine Ross.
