When Prince Charles stopped by the Virgin Megastore in Paris on Wednesday, he looked tanned and handsome in a dark blue double-breasted suit and an Hermes tie. The Prince has a reputation for being cold, but he was quite amiable, shaking hands and chatting with people in the crowd -- particularly the pretty girls. His tour included the Tie Shop and the Body Shop, since he was in Paris promoting British business. But he seemed also to be promoting his new image of being just as warm and accessible as Princess Diana.

Charles is certainly ahead of Diana in the style game these days, according to the British press. Tatler magazine and the British tabloids are attacking the newly-shy Di for losing the style that turned her into a cover girl. The latest outfit that has the fashion critics in an uproar is an elephant-motif Escada blazer, tie and belt. Diana wore the jacket with black jeans from Banana Republic and caramel suede ankle boots.

"It was ostentatious and not right for a princess, even an off-duty one," screamed The Daily Mail. Former Di worshipers are fretting she's turning into an "Essex girl," a flashy English suburbanite with more money than taste.

Emanuel Ungaro is planning an eight-day blitz of America, fitting in a party for himself and 300 women.

In his first U.S. visit in four years, Ungaro plans to see Luciano Pavarotti at New York's Met when he arrives on Wednesday, April 13. On Thursday, Saks will host a lunch for the designer, and on Friday he's taking a group of 30 retailers and editors to lunch at La Grenouille.

Ungaro plans to hit the 26th Street flea market over the weekend before heading to the West Coast, where Betsy Bloomingdale is to host a lunch for him in L.A. on Monday. That night, he'll take a gang of friends to Spago. Also on the schedule, an appearance at Neiman Marcus's Beverly Hills store.
The trip's highlight will come on Wednesday, April 20, when Ungaro stages a runway show in Neiman's San Francisco store of his fall-winter 1994 collection to benefit Cancer Care Center. Chairwomen Ann Getty, Sharon Owsley and Ellen Magnum Newman have decided to restrict the after-show dinner to a few hundred women -- plus Emanuel.

Anthony Hopkins, who's up for an Oscar for his role in "The Remains of the Day," is a little superstitious. That's why he's wearing the same Nino Cerruti tuxedo to the Oscars that he wore two years ago when he picked up the Best Actor award for his performance in "Silence of the Lambs."

Yves Saint Laurent has been reading the memoirs of Luchino Visconti lately and watching all the director's old classics. Now Yves wants to buy a residence on Capri where the Italian director spent many summers.
