Caesar may have given the Romans their first circus but Tuesday night Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana whipped up a pop-fueled spectacle of their own, entertaining Milan’s fashion set with a modern-day bacchanalia in honor of Kylie Minogue. (They designed the costumes for her current "Fever" tour.) Chiffon toga-clad men and women hung from the ceilings on swings, while others bathed in bubbles and ground around the stage. From a huge wooden cart laden with strawberries, dancers wearing only gauzy skirts and two well-placed berries doled out handfuls of fruit.
The duo’s faithful followers wore T-shirts they’d been given to customize in order to gain entry. Slashed, burned, pinned, ripped, wrapped, worn as dresses and even as bandannas — no two were alike. As for the guest of honor, Minogue arrived fashionably late, following her concert. Fans hoped the pop siren would belt out her final encore at the party — she didn’t — but her entrance on a golden litter carried on the shoulders of two strapping gladiators didn’t disappoint.
Wearing a gold pleated mini and wrapped ribbon top, Minogue twirled to her hit single, "Can’t Get You Out Of My Head." Then she thanked Dolce and Gabbana and split.
Still, the designers were smitten. Is Kylie their new Madonna? "Kylie," Gabbana simply sighed, "is Kylie.""
