Art, music, fashion and Hollywood converged Tuesday night at the American Patrons of the Tate’s Artists Dinner hosted by Glenda Bailey and Lynn Forester de Rothschild, the charity’s chairwoman. “This is all about American patrons bringing American artists to Britain and Europe,” explained de Rothschild, who successfully lured a slew of American artists to Hearst Tower for the event, including David Salle, John Currin, Matthew Barney, John Baldessari, Rachel Feinstein and Richard Tuttle. Claes Oldenburg and Wolfgang Tillmans, though Swedish and German, respectively, also came out to show their support, as did Becca Cason Thrash, Beth Rudin De Woody, Barney’s wife Björk, Gabourey Sidibe, Jason Wu, Iman, Stefano Pilati, Kate and Laura Mulleavy and Patti Smith, who also performed four songs between the entree and dessert courses.

“To tell you the truth, I was happy to meet not just the artists, but the patrons,” said Smith. “I’m not the most social person, so sometimes I have a little trouble, but I’ve found that people will help you along. It’s much easier when I have to sing — much easier for me to work than play.”

And Smith had a big fan in Bailey’s boyfriend Steve Sumner, who approached the singer after her set to express his admiration. “When I met Glenda, it was 1977 and we were two little rockers. I know it’s hard to believe it now, but we were, and still are — at heart,” said Sumner.
