While everybody seemed to admire the work on display at the opening of the International Fine Art Fair in New York the other night, there wasn't a lot of impulse buying.

Blaine Trump was worried that her husband, Robert, might not like the price tag on a painting she adored. Judy Taubman also found a little Renaissance something she liked -- but didn't have her own purchasing power.

"That's my checkbook," she laughed, pointing to husband Al, who is head of Sotheby's and said he found the show to be "the highest quality." Obviously, others agreed: Robert De Niro, Steve Martin, Mark Hampton, Valentino and Giancarlo Giammetti have all been in since.

Shopping was a little freer at F.A.O. Schwarz a few nights later during a party for the premiere of the movie "Getting Even With Dad" -- especially since a portion of the sales were going to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. Donna Karan spent some money -- but since daughter Gaby has outgrown stuffed animals, she bought toys for the family dog.

"I don't have a husband or a checkbook with me," explained Patty Hearst to a clerk, who let her put purchases on hold. And Kelly McGillis had her hands full trying to distract her young daughter from a Doctor Dreadful kit. "If I were a kid this place would short me out," sighed McGillis. After a day in rehearsals for a production of "Hedda Gabler," which opens at the Roundabout Theater this summer, McGillis was already feeling frazzled.
