"I am the Yves Saint Laurent girl, for a long time and forever,' said Betty Catroux as she arrived to the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective in San Francisco Thursday night. "Everything I am wearing, from my glasses to my shoes, was designed by Yves."
The late designer's friends and fans, including Deeda Blair, Lynn Wyatt, Dede Wilsey, Denise Hale, and Becca Cason Thrash, wandered the de Young Museum where a selection of Saint Laurent's work dating back to 1961 was on display. "I'm just a man who met a genius forty years ago," said Pierre Berge. "I am seeing a large part of my life in this exhibition."
Tatiana Sorokko felt the same way when she came face to face with a black lace gown, held together by just two very delicate bows, that she wore on the runway in 1990. "It was my first modeling job in Paris," said Sorokko. "It was totally sheer. I can't believe I wore it." Danielle Steel broke from convention and donned a Raj-inspired Alexander McQueen gown for the affair. "I told my daughter Victoria that I was thinking of wearing an Yves Saint Laurent couture gown from my collection," recalled Steel, "but she said, 'Go with the McQueen. Vintage couture makes you look old.'"
