The metal sequins currently covering the facade of the James Cohan Gallery aren’t scattered remnants of its holiday decor. The installation, created by artist Howard Goldkrand, is part of the group show "Air," featuring 29 artists and spanning 150 years, which opens Friday and runs through Feb. 15.
"We wanted to explore how different artists have thought about something that’s invisible," says Elyse Goldberg, one of the exhibition’s curators. "The ineffable air."
To that end, the works cut a wide swath, ranging from paintings by Marcel Duchamp and Damien Hirst to Marina Abramovic’s video piece, "Breathing In/Breathing Out." In it, she and her ex-husband breathe into each other’s mouths until they pass out. Ann Hamilton’s video shows her balancing a ping-pong ball on a pipe, while Robert Gober’s installation reveals a sky diorama as seen through a prison window.
Other featured artists include Erick Swenson, Jenny Holzer, Janine Antoni, Dennis Oppenheim, Ann Hamilton and Ed Ruscha.
