Somewhere along the line, the idea of asking an actress about how and why she chose to wear a particular gown ceased to become an insider-y question and turned into merely part of a laundry list of questions that celebrities are asked to answer over and over as they make their way down a red carpet. Between "What's your favorite workout?" "What did you do to get ready this morning?" and "Who's going to win the Super Bowl?" the casual listener would be hard pressed to tell whether they were at a quiz show or an awards show.
Sunday was actually the 17th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, where actors vote amongst themselves for the best performances. Luckily, they're not asked to vote for best-dressed, a difficult task given the random assortment of looks on display. Winter, spring or pre-fall? Jewel tone, pastel or print? Wool, chiffon or lace? Floor-length, cocktail or pantsuit? No wonder actresses are reduced to one-word answers given the barrage of questions.
"Because it's heaven," said Angie Harmon by way of explaining her Monique Lhuillier.
"Because I like bows," said Nicole Kidman of her Nina Ricci.
"Because it's comfortable," said Mila Kunis of her Alexander McQueen.
Even those who professed to know nothing about fashion couldn't help but poke fun at all the interest in the clothes over the acting. "The Office" star Angela Kinsey, who accessorized with Chopard diamonds and Steve Madden heels, quipped "High-low, baby. Isn't that what they call mixing it up?"
