A good deal isn’t hard to find these days, but the deeply discounted duds on offer at Super Saturday 12 — Donna Karan’s annual designer garage sale — still drew a crowd of determined bargain hunters to Nova’s Ark Project in Water Mill, N.Y., this past weekend.
Guests including co-host Blake Lively, Lorraine Bracco, Barbara Walters, Rudy Giuliani, Mariska Hargitay and Kerry Washington picked through racks from labels like Yigal Azrouël, Charlotte Ronson and Brian Reyes at the In Style-sponsored event, which raised $3.4 million for the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
Some arrived rarin’ to go. “I’m a very decisive shopper — I always know exactly what I want,” declared Lively, who first had to get through the frenzied pack of reporters and fans who greeted her at the entrance.
Others had different priorities. “I’m wearing too many hats today to shop,” said Karan, who worked her own booth and later read books in the children’s tent with granddaughter Stefania. “I’m not here to look for bargains. I already created the ultimate bargain,” explained the designer.
No kidding. Plaid Steven Alan shirts that retail for $158 went for $65; J Brand jeans, normally $158, were $100; and an $8,000 Donna Karan collection gown went for $500. The Row, which slashed the $250 dollar price tag of its T-shirts to $75, sold out after an hour and a half.
Still, all the major markdowns didn’t leave much of an impression on some.
“I’m a horrible bargain hunter,” said Christy Turlington, who nonetheless spent the day browsing the children’s section with her mother, Maria. “I’ll pretty much pay whatever anyone’s asking.”
