A little after 10 p.m. on Friday, Jen Brill stood in front of the DJ booth at the Top of the Standard working a bingo tumbler, a device that looked a little out of place in the night spot.
“We were just watching videos on YouTube. I don’t know why anyone would watch those videos on YouTube, but we were,” Brill said after giving the tumbler a few cranks. “I knew Humberto was the guy to call.…It literally came together Monday.”
“It” being the party that was beginning to rage around her. Brill, Rinko Kikuchi and Justin Theroux had teamed with Opening Ceremony’s Humberto Leon, Carol Lim and Olivia Kim on the evening to leverage the outfit’s cool-kid sway for a party to benefit the American Red Cross’ earthquake and tsunami relief efforts in Japan. Nicola Formichetti, Daphne Guinness, Lake Bell, Charlotte Ronson and Sky Ferreira were among those who turned out for the cause. In addition to a $20 minimum donation at the door, the host committee worked their connections to arrange raffle prizes from Alexander Wang, Comme des Garçons and The Breslin, among others. Whether it was the prospect of laying hands on a $700-plus Proenza Schouler tote bag for the cost of a $20 raffle ticket, or just the opportunity to do some good without straying too far from a Friday night routine, the room was packed shortly after the doors opened.
As the first of the evening’s raffles got under way, Theroux — standing in one of the club’s side rooms with Kikuchi and Spike Jonze — looked to be in the former camp, checking his tickets and shaking his head as his numbers didn’t come up. He looked truly unhappy when a $100 gift certificate to Oyster Bar didn’t go his way.
“I was genuinely disappointed,” he admitted with a laugh, adding he’d never won a raffle before. “I won tickets to ‘Goonies’ once on a radio station.”
