Days after dressing the First Lady for the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, Naeem Khan threw an intimate supper on Wednesday night at Chateau Marmont in West Hollywood. Over the cocktail hour in the garden, the designer admitted the outfit coup came as a surprise.

“I was here in L.A. and the next thing I see is these e-mails saying, ‘Michelle Obama is wearing Naeem Khan,’” he said. “Coming from a country like India, colors mean so much to me. I think they work beautifully on her.”

The first arrival of the evening, Julie Bowen, saw the dress in person.

“I had run out of things to talk about,” Bowen recalled. “I expended all of my conversation about the dog and her children, so I went for the chick question. I said, ‘What are you wearing tonight, Mrs. Obama?’ She said, ‘Naeem Khan’ I was like, ‘I have something to talk about. I have 20 minutes of material on this. I can go for days!’”

Khan and his wife, jewelry designer Ranjana Khan, also mingled with actresses Jordana Brewster, Angie Harmon, Kaley Cuoco, Ellie Kemper, Teresa Palmer, Ahna O’Reilly and Ashley Madekwe. Naturally, the group was clad in his work though, for most, this was the first time they met the designer.

Kemper had additional cause for celebration. After word got out it was her birthday, the group surprised “The Office” actress with a candle-lit chocolate soufflé and a round of “Happy Birthday.”
