The social set packed the house at the Museum of the City of New York’s Winter Ball on Thursday night at The Plaza, a bit literally. As cocktail hour in one of the hotel's anterooms wore on and arrivals kept filtering in, guests, who included Julia Koch, Zani Guggelman, Lynn Wyatt, Lauren Remington Platt, Celerie Kemble and Helen Schifter, among others, stood shoulder to well-clothed shoulder.
“Man, this place is tight,” one tuxedoed gentleman said to a friend while maneuvering through the crowd.
“It’s a popular party now,” his buddy explained rather matter of factly. In a less cramped corner of the room, recent Los Angeles transfer Jamie Tisch explained that she had yet to make it to the night’s beneficiary, but is making her way through the city’s cultural institutions.
“I just went to the New Museum for the George Condo show,” she said approvingly. A bit later, she and Heather Mnuchin, who was in town from L.A. for the party, traded tips on their Oscar night routines.
After cocktails, the party moved to an upstairs ballroom for dinner. In his brief remarks, ball chairman Mark Gilbertson, the evening’s unofficial MC, implored partygoers to make use of the dance floor.
“Please dance to justify this big dance floor because otherwise we could have sold more seats,” he joked.
As Lady Gaga and Rihanna began to pulse through the sound system and at least one pair of heels came off, it seemed his pleadings might have been unnecessary.
