On Tuesday night, Channing Tatum was in a tough room.
“With my wife, that’s what that would be,” the actor laughed when asked what had brought him to a party thrown by Miu Miu in a large loft space in SoHo. “I’m probably the worst interview you could have in one of these places.”
The brand was screening “The Woman Dress,” a short by filmmaker Giada Colagrande, that, as the invite explained, explores women’s “love affair” with the Italian label. While love may have been the stated emotion of preference, the party seemed to be exploring a more ambiguous set of responses to fashion. Invitees gained access via a service elevator and then had to navigate a dark, mazelike hallway to reach the party. Wire hangers and plastic dry cleaning bags hung from the ceiling. The lighting tended towards red. Abel Ferrara, Marina Abramovic and Paul Auster were all in attendance.
The crowd also included Colagrande and husband Willem Dafoe, Mia Wasikowska, Kate Mara, Joe Jonas, Leighton Meester, several Courtin-Clarins sisters and the Brooklyn band Au Revoir Simone, which provided a live soundtrack to the short and then played a short set.
The conversation with Tatum turned to other fashion week events, and his wife, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, was all too happy to step up.
“This is my first time coming to fashion week, I’ve been to a few [shows]” she said, rattling off the half-dozen stops she had made or planned to make this week. “I was happily taking him tonight. He’s sat out a few.”
Her husband laughed.
“I was a model for a while, and I respect it, but I don’t know if it’s something I would throw my life into,” he said. “I know what my strengths are.”
