Masks a Go-Go at French Vogue Party

The main preoccupation for many of Paris Fashion Week show-goers was finding masks for French Vogue’s 90th anniversary “Eyes Wide Shut”-themed masquerade ball.

HIDE AND SEEK: Never mind the runway. The main preoccupation for many of Paris Fashion Week show-goers on Thursday was finding masks for French Vogue’s 90th anniversary “Eyes Wide Shut”-themed masquerade ball.

 

Olivier Theyskens, Coco Rocha, Miuccia Prada, Francisco Costa, Thakoon Panichgul, Delphine Arnault, Christopher Bailey, Hedi Slimane, Gisele Bündchen, Diane von Furstenberg, Bianca Jagger, Tyra Banks and Lenny Kravitz were among those who thronged the Palazzo di Borgo.

 

Stars and flowers dangled from Karlie Kloss’s mask, made by Stephen Jones to match her silver Dior dress; a pigtailed Victoire de Castellane came dressed as a buxom Red Riding Hood; and Alexander Wang went incognito in a balaclava. Natalia Vodianova gushed over Riccardo Tisci's “amazing” lace and feather mask, custom made by Philip Treacy. But Mariacarla Boscono came out trumps, skillfully balancing a towering black feathered Givenchy couture mask hat that one admiring onlooker likened to a cuddly creature from “Where the Wild Things Are.” 

 

One of the hôtel particulier’s upper salons was devoted to sweet treats, with a vast caramel sculpture centerpiece, mounds of berries and macaroon towers. “Oh my goodness, even the models are eating, it’s amazing,” laughed host Carine Roitfeld, as Lily Donaldson gingerly peeled a leaf from a giant chocolate cabbage. Donaldson was wearing a femme fatale scarlet tulle eye veil to match her Dior gown. “I made it myself. I went all the way up to the fabric district in Montmartre today,” she said.

 

“I got it from a sex shop,” laughed a wintry looking Sasha Pivovarova, who accessorized her folkloric Jean Paul Gaultier outfit with printed headscarves and a fur stole. Pivovarova, who said she is taking photos for French Vogue this week, disclosed she’s working on illustrations for a new version of a Russian fairy tale, “Snow Maiden,” that will be published by 7L over the coming months. “I kind of rewrote the story to give it a Buddhist slant,” she said. Anja Rubik said she’s been working on a shoe line for Polish brand, Apart, and plans to design jewelry for them for next year. “It’s like a pair of lady’s panties,” laughed chaperone Peter Dundas, pulling his floppy black beaded mask out of his pocket.

 

As guests boogied in the main salon, Stephen Jones stalked around with a perforated mirror clamped to his face. “It’s amazing,” cooed Chanel Iman. “I got to reapply my lipstick.”
