Anna Wintour introduced the designer, who was honored for his contributions to French fashion.

On Thursday night, New York’s French Institute Alliance Française awarded Marc Jacobs its 2010 FIAF Trophée des Arts for his contributions to French fashion. He was one of two honorees that night — the other being Total ceo Christophe de Margerie. “I’m lucky to have this great job at Louis Vuitton,” said Jacobs “I can’t put [what I love about Paris] into one thing. It’s an ephemeral feeling, I feel happy and comfortable there. It’s the physical city, the lifestyle, the wine, the art.” Jacobs was given an introduction by Anna Wintour, who had one recommendation for the designer. “I’d urge you to take a trip to China,” said the Vogue editor-in-chief who recently returned from a trip there. “Everywhere I went, I heard the same thing. ‘Ms. Wintour, do you know Marc Jacobs? Could you possibly get me Marc Jacobs’ autograph? A signed photograph?’” For the record, Wintour wore Marc Jacobs and Chanel — “America and France,” she remarked.

Also present that evening: actor Michael Pitt, painter and author (and Picasso muse) Françoise Gilot, artists John Currin and Rachel Feinstein and Fe Fendi, who wore Fendi, of course, but noted her pink fur shrug and navy dress were “Marc’s colors.” Alexa Chung, in a Sixties-style Marc Jacobs dress, noted she was a big fan of the designer’s womanly take for Louis Vuitton, fall 2010. Even though she’s an ultra-slim petite? “I love classics,” she said. “And I thought it was such a departure to do a figure-hugging, voluptuous celebration.”
