The Caudalie Spa at The Plaza hotel was converted into a dinner party Thursday night to celebrate the recent collaboration between L’Wren Scott and the grapeseed-infused beauty brand. “It wasn’t a money project, it wasn’t a vanity project, it’s something I really believe in,” said Scott, who designed a limited-edition bottle of Caudalie’s Beauty Elixir, launching next month. “[Some] call it sex in a bottle but I call it spa in a bottle,” said Scott, who discovered the product in 1997 at a French pharmacy and quickly started buying it in bulk. “It [works] a little bit faster than sex.”
Partygoers dined on foie gras with smoked duck breast, poached salmon and wine from Caudalie’s founder Mathilde Thomas’ family vineyard in Bordeaux, France, where the brand’s grapes are sourced.
“I read in a magazine that L’Wren loved the Beauty Elixir; one time, two times, three times, four times…at the fifth time I pick up my phone and called her and I asked her [to] meet,” said Thomas. The resulting design, which Scott said was inspired by her fall collection, and nods to Gustav Klimt, alludes to both femininity and nature.
“Hearing Mathilde talk about the vineyard, the vines and the grape seeds, I subliminally put those elements into my design without even realizing it,” said Scott. “We were very aligned from Day One. We are both big travelers, we both are very transient and we like to make life easy.” When asked if she’d consider launching a cosmetics collection in the future, Scott hinted that there may be news on the horizon. “Fashion designers and color; that’s what we work in. Color is a huge part of how I tell my story in fashion and in my shows. I’m never opposed to that.”
Those in attendance included Kelly Rutherford, Serge Normant, André Balazs, Carmen Busquets, Alain Delon, Desiree Gruber and Ellen Barkin, who said she has been “exclusively” wearing Scott’s designs for 25 years. “I’d call [Scott] on the phone and say I decided to go to the Oscars and they’re like tomorrow, and I can tell you that in 24 hours I had a dress that needed no alteration,” said Barkin, who is currently filming “Hands of Stone” in New York. “Sometimes she will call me up and say can you wear something more recent, and not six years ago? And I’m like, but I wear that purple velvet jacket every day. And that is the genius of her clothes. Is that they don’t go out of style.”
