On Thursday evening, a swarm of jewelry lovers packed into a private town house on the Upper East Side to celebrate the launch of Lauren X Khoo, a new line of fine jewelry from Singapore-born designer Lauren Khoo. The designer, who currently has a handful of pieces in Dover Street Market, gathered an impressive crowd for the debut of her first collection, ranging from famous wives and women about town, Deborra-Lee Furness and Beth Ostrosky Stern, to Khoo’s college mentor from her days at Brown University.
As guests sipped on specialty pomegranate cocktails, Khoo dutifully walked individuals through the collection, providing a personal story about the inspiration for each piece. Starburst, a star-shaped cuff done in multicolored sapphires, was inspired by princess fantasies. “You know how you dream of living the clouds? It’s the idea that there is always a little girl inside of us,” she said. Other inspirations vary from architectural (the X Chinois ring, which incorporates lattice patterns from the Qing Dynasty) to sentimental (the Noir Freedom ring, which pairs movable diamond feathers to symbolize “leaving the nest”). Each piece, created by a single craftsman in Hong Kong, is produced in a limited quantity, often capping at 50 units or fewer.
Replete in sparkle, Khoo’s fine jewelry debut was also not lacking a good cause. The designer was recently announced as presenting sponsor of the upcoming New Yorkers for Children Spring Dinner Dance. A percentage of all sales from the evening’s event — where the opening price point hovered around $10,000 — would benefit the charity, which focuses on improving the lives of children in foster care. “I decided I wanted to give back and connect with a charity,” said Khoo. “As a little girl, my late grandmother always taught us to give back. I wanted to find a charity here, and New Yorkers for Children was that.”
