Christopher Kane has built a fairly steady reputation in recent years as one of a handful of cool, young British designers.
It was appropriate, then, that a dinner celebrating his recent partnership on a denim line for J Brand drew a mix of cool, young New York scenesters to Freemans Alley on Thursday night. Liya Kebede, Eddie Borgo, Dree Hemingway, Hannah Bronfman, Waris Ahluwalia, Jenne Lombardo and Maggie Betts all made their way to a cozy second-floor dining room at the Lower East Side comfort-food mecca for the party co-hosted by J Brand chief executive officer Jeff Rudes and Vogue’s Meredith Melling Burke. Throughout the evening, Kane dutifully chatted up the partygoers, some of whom, such as Caroline Sieber and Hanneli Mustaparta, wore the very neon J Brand-Christopher Kane denim wares.
“He’s like Mr. Snuffleupagus,” said Jen Brill of the designer’s Stateside visit. “I e-mail with him and [sister and business partner] Tammy all the time, but I’m not sure he actually exists.”
As the evening wound down, Kane had a chance to respond to the comparison.
“You know what it is? We met five years ago, and we have so much in common,” he said of the transatlantic correspondence with Brill. “Yes, I am slightly ‘Sesame Street.’ I love Jim Henson, so….”
