NEW YORK — There are probably few better ways to welcome a gaggle of designers to the Council of Fashion Designers of America than recreating a hot New York nightclub.
On Wednesday night, Vera Wang did just that when she moved out almost all the furniture from the first floor of her vast Park Avenue apartment, set up bars in several rooms, and had the music blasting so loud that it’s almost a miracle the co-op board didn’t call the police. Then again, Wang confessed she and her husband, Arthur Becker, are quite the pros when it comes to throwing a good party.
“There must be 300 people here,” she said. “My husband and I like to give a party. This isn’t the first one, and hopefully won’t be the last.” The 26 new members, including Robert Geller, Bibhu Mohapatra, Waris Ahluwalia, Lubov Azria, Karen Erickson, Vicki Beamon and Adam Kimmel roamed through the spaces, and met with other designers including Tory Burch, Elie Tahari, Rebecca Moses, Tommy Hilfiger, Peter Som, Reed Krakoff, Richard Chai, Cathy Hardwick and Maria Cornejo.
Earlier in the evening, CFDA president Diane von Furstenberg recalled her own beginnings, and how, when she decided to relaunch her line over a decade ago, she was welcomed by Stan Herman, then-president of the CFDA. She told the new inductees that it was as important for them to understand how to accept advice from established designers, as it was for the designers to give it.
At the beginning of the night, the new members posed for a group shot.
“I was trying to show off my shoes, but it didn’t work,” said Ulrich Grimm, the creative director of Calvin Klein men’s and women’s shoes and accessories, who was summoned to the back row because of his height. “I had to stand next to L’Wren Scott.”
