Alexander Wang has played host to some fairly incongruous headliners at his post-show parties in the past, but for sheer physical spectacle Saturday night’s bash at the former Emigrant Industrial Savings Bank building opposite City Hall will be hard to top. A little after 1 a.m., Busta Rhymes — the still beloved, but past-his-prime rap star, whose build is testament to modern sports science — beckoned the spritely designer to the stage.
“Listen, Mr. Wang, I want to say something to you,” Rhymes said in his concrete baritone. “To be so young and to be so prosperous, and to be so productive and to be so f---ing incredibly creatively genius, it’s only right that we all make a toast to you and your amazing accomplishments that we’re celebrating tonight, my brother...”
His toast completed, the rapper offered the designer an exaggerated bow. The crowd, mostly made up of devotees to Wang’s brand of high-end street style cool, applauded enthusiastically. And with good reason. It was the designer's largesse after all, that had seen them served at the pre-World War I building’s gated teller’s windows all night, and provided them with an earlier performance from the aggressively weird South African rave rap group Die Antwoord.
Among those taking it all in were Gerard Bulter, Hanne Gaby Odiele, Justin Theroux and Solange Knowles. Liberty Ross, model wife of the director Rupert Sanders and a tabloid staple since news of her husband’s affair with Kristen Stewart broke over the summer, stood near the back of the crowd in between performances. Ross had caused a small commotion earlier in the day when she walked in Wang’s show, her first runway appearance in quite a while, she said.
“It felt amazing, thank you,” Ross said of her return, which, she explained had been the designer’s idea and not part of a calculated comeback on her part.
“I wish it was that easy darling,” she said with a roll of her eyes.
