BOSTON — Whether it was the bold Diller, Scofidio + Renfro architecture or the kismet of finding his favorite artists on exhibition, Akris designer Albert Kriemler fell in love with the Institute of Contemporary Art Boston when he visited a few years ago. Now, to help the museum celebrate its 75th anniversary, Kriemler has designed a limited-edition scarf inspired by the building’s cantilevered, ocean-facing façade.
The 25 scarves will sell for $475 apiece at the brand’s Newbury Street boutique, which took reserves on the piece during a reception Tuesday night, the first in a series of ICA anniversary events. Akris is also sponsoring the museum’s October gala. In honor of the milestone, the museum hung images from past galas, including its inaugural fete where Salvador Dali and his wife Gala both came dressed as sharks.
“This is one art genre supporting another,” said Akris chief executive Melissa Beste, who attended the reception.
Newbury Street has been awhirl with arrivals and departures since the recession, but Akris continues to have a robust business there, Beste said. Knitwear, photo prints and jackets are selling well.
“Albert has moved the brand forward, so we’re speaking to a wider audience,” she said, adding she believes the brand could support several more U.S. stores over the next few years.
“We’re making plans to announce a retail expansion,” she said, declining to provide specifics.
The ICA typically partners with a fashion brand for its annual gala, and has worked with Barneys New York, Ferragamo and others.
