Then there’s Tetsuya’s, whose lavish menus offer west Australian marrons with truffle mayonnaise, marinated fillet of trevally, tataki of venison, ocean trout confit and double-cooked deboned spatchcock, which kept the eatery in Restaurant magazine’s World Top 10 list.
Some of the city’s best-known restaurants are around the harbor, like Guillaume at Bennelong, under the “sails” of the Sydney Opera House, whose chef Guillaume Brahimi is renowned for his basil-infused tuna, scallops with cauliflower puree and wagyu fillet with red wine jus.

With a swag of stores from Willow and New Zealand’s Zambesi and World, The Intersection in the terrace-dotted suburb of Paddington is the buzziest new retail strip. Belinda Seper, Australia’s premier multibrand retailer, has 12 stores in three Australian states and one in Johannesburg. But The Corner Shop in Paddington with a second store in the Central Business District’s Strand Arcade, is Seper’s new talent incubator. With a flea market vibe, and cool shopgirls, The Corner Shops’ labels include newcomers Dion Lee, Konstantina Mittas and Antipodium, fresh from Australian Fashion Week debuts in May, and Australia’s edgy Ben Pollitt, who designs the Friedrich Gray line — he was discovered driving Seper’s delivery van.
