Chicagoans love their city in the summer, and there are plenty of ways to enjoy the simmering heat on the street.
GO GREEN: Pedal past some of the city’s storied streets on a private bike tour as part of the hotel InterContinental Chicago’s new eco-tour package, available through Labor Day. Enjoy one-night accommodations, one-day bike rental and a guided tour of the city’s popular Lincoln Park and Old Town neighborhoods. It’s just one of the eco-friendly initiatives (think energy and water conservation plans) adopted by the hotel, the city’s first property to be awarded an Energy Star rating by the EPA. Package rates begin at $229 a night.
NO PLACE LIKE HOME: Decor divas won’t want to miss a trip to Branca with its elegant home furnishings, textiles and furniture. Mixing traditional tastes with a bit of whimsy, interior designer Alessandra Branca offers items from Virginia Witbeck and Peter Dunham as well as antiques including 17th century Dutch mirrors, all housed in the renovated Gold Coast townhome with rich red and acid green walls. Fashion types will appreciate the books by Assouline.
TIME TO INDULGE: After all that activity, an evening at Lockwood Restaurant in the recently renovated Palmer House Hilton offers the perfect (albeit pricy) respite. Expect a relaxed, refined dining experience from chef Phillip Foss, a former sous chef at New York’s Le Cirque.
