Berlin’s newest club goes back to the city’s roots.

A forest on the eastern outskirts of the city is hardly the most likely place for Berlin’s latest nightclub. But with the German capital now a hot spot for clubbing tourists, the seriously cool now have to go seriously far to get back to Berlin’s underground roots.

Rechenzentrum, which opened at the end of April, is hardly easy to find: The only way to get there is on an unmarked black minibus — complete with pumping electronic music — that departs from Ostkreuz station, on the eastern edge of the city. But for the cool kids in town, this is part of the attraction.

Once dropped off at the entrance, guests wind their way down a dark path, through a post-industrial wasteland  that has been taken over by the forest. Outside the club, a beach bar, complete with dance floor and deck chairs, is sandwiched between the trees and a lake. The club itself, in a boxlike, modernist structure, is the studio of an old radio station from former communist East Germany, and hosts big-name minimal, electro, techno and experimental DJs, such as Donato Dozzy and Daniel Dreier.

According to club manager Katinka Brundiers, the sound-insulated location provides an authentic retro feel, as well as great acoustics. “When you are inside, you can barely hear anything from the outside,” she says. “And if you do, at most it’s like footsteps walking on snow.”
