Martin Margiela has turned out to be fashion’s very own Greta Garbo. But, hey, even WWD scored snapshots of the elusive actress strolling the New York streets and ran them on November 9, 1966, and  June 27, 1977. So in 2006, the paper staked out Margiela’s Paris headquarters for two days, set on capturing the designer on film. It photographed every individual entering the premises—men and women of all ethnicities—and presented the findings in the March 1 issue. “What better way to hide than under a motorcycle helmet?” ran one caption. Another, of a portly lady in knee-high stockings and a babushka, read, “Any man of mystery is a master of disguise...” Margiela turned out to be the man in a newsboy cap.
