While the start of Japan’s school year is in April, the fall term is well under way for students at this Tokyo music and art high school where, historically, they could wear anything they chose. Currently, however, uniforms are being phased in and will be mandatory as of next year, in line with all public and most private schools in Japan. At the moment, students opt for a mix of street and uniform outfits and, amusingly, many of the girls wear fake uniforms, replete with plaid miniskirts and knee socks as they are so eager to get that iconic Japanese school-girl look. “Cool” guys wear traditional wrap trousers, and easels are a favorite accessory. —Amanda Kaiser
