While the Northern Hemisphere is well into fall, it’s spring in Australia. And that can mean unpredictable weather in Sydney, the biggest metropolis, which hugs a wind-swept harbor. When it comes to Sunday shopping on the city’s hippest retail strip, Oxford Street, Paddington, the PYTs of Sydney’s affluent eastern suburbs are hedging their fashion bets. Some are braving any chill with short little dresses or skirts, sometimes with a bit of protection — tights, opaque stockings or leggings.

Added to the ubiquitous jeans here are harem pants and the occasional long dress. And stripes show up everywhere — on scarves, sweaters and dresses. On top: denim jackets, leather bombers and long cardigans. Add everything from boots to gladiator sandals and the “thong.” That’s Australian slang for flip-flops — which are almost a religion Down Under, whatever the temperature.
