Custom was the name of the game for the A-List actresses at the 69th Annual Golden Globe Awards on Sunday. The trend left little room for second choices, but it seemed that none were needed for this year’s decisive bunch.

“It’s just effortless,” said Charlize Theron of her Dior Couture confection. “And I feel so romantic in it.”

Jessica Chastain also had love on the brain. “It was love at first sight,” she said of her beaded white Givenchy gown. “I feel so Old Hollywood and modern at the same time.”

“Was it my first choice? It was my only choice,” said Michelle Williams of her long-sleeved Jason Wu gown, which she said was “keeping me warm.”

Rooney Mara, who turned heads in what has become her trademark, a cut-out gown by Nina Ricci, said, “I didn’t have an idea in mind when we started, but this was the first dress I tried, and I decided right there. It’s comfortable and that’ the most important thing.”

Evan Rachel Wood, who channeled a glam peacock in her Gucci Premiere gown, received swatches in the mail as the piece came together, but said, “you never know until you put it on. This turned out to be one of my favorites. I do leave a slight trail of feathers, but at least people know how to find me.”

Others who wore one-of-a-kind gowns included Madeline Stowe in Vera Wang, Zooey Deschanel in Prada, Angelina Jolie in Versace and Natalie Portman in Lanvin.

For fashion favorite Tilda Swinton, Haider Ackerman went the extra mile -- literally. “He just delivered me out of the car,” said Swinton, “and now he’s going back to Paris.” Of the cacophony surrounding her, she said, “It reminds me of a country fair, which is kind of fun to be honest with you.”

Gazing around at all the finery, newcomer Shailene Woodley said of her Marchesa dress, “When I first put on this gown, I thought, ‘No, I need to find something more casual, this feels too fancy. But all my friends were like, ‘No, Shai, you need to wear a long fancy dress.’ Now that I’m here, I see why.”
