There's a small clique of women who were major obsessions of the paper. Jackie Kennedy was one; Coco Chanel, another. In Hollywood, that honor belonged to Ali MacGraw of Love Story. WWD was there, behind the scenes, as the actress shot the 1970 film with co-star Ryan O'Neal. Two years later, on August 30, 1972, it ran a more revealing profile tied to The Getaway debut. While MacGraw remained tight-lipped about her then still-alleged affair with Steve McQueen, she dished about everything else, from her sweet-girl stereotype ("Who the hell is charming all the time?") to politics ("Half-informed movie stars who make stupid remarks about politicians embarrass me."). Even as she lost the role of Daisy Buchanan in 1974's The Great Gatsby (which turned into yet another WWD fascination), the MacGraw coverage continued. The former fashion assistant would become one of the enduring style icons of the Seventies with her fresh-faced bohemian beauty, knit cap and all. When she slipped, WWD was there, too. A rare case in point: the December 5, 1979, coverage of the Met gala, in which MacGraw was dubbed an FV, fashion victim, for the night.
