Jackie Kennedy loved clothes so much that, as designer Bob Bugnand told WWD, "she fell in love with a new coat and insisted on having it immediately; so quickly, in fact, she left for London with the hem basted." That report came out in July of 1960, an early episode in the paper's long, near obsession with the captivating political wife. Five months later, John F. Kennedy became the 35th president of the United States. As First Lady, Kennedy continued to flaunt a flair for fashion, becoming an instant style icon with her wardrobe of trim suits, pillbox hats, low-heeled shoes and pearls. Despite stinging criticism that she often gravitated toward French styles, Kennedy, with Oleg Cassini as her official designer, elevated the nation's capital to an international epicenter of chic. And in years after the president's assassination, as wife of Aristotle Onassis, Jackie O—as she was dubbed by WWD (and her new husband, Daddy O)—continued to be an enduring style inspiration and fixation for the paparazzi in their earliest days, in her Hermès head scarves, Gucci bags and those famous oversize sunglasses, which launched the trend for Jackie O frames that continues today.
