LONDON — “We did it, the book is published!” an ebullient Matthew Williamson said Tuesday night at the launch of his eponymous coffee table book at London's Somerset House — which was lit up in the designer's signature purple.
Williamson swooped into the party with Sienna Miller — who was dressed in a flowing, bright blue gown from his spring collection — on his arm, and both stopped first to kiss their respective mothers, who were waiting at the door. “Even our mums are best friends,” said Miller, who co-hosted the event with British Harper’s Bazaar editor Lucy Yeomans.
Guests included Savannah Miller, Simon Doonan, Marigay McKee, Twiggy and Harold Tillman, who strolled through an exhibition of photographs from the book. Some of the best shots feature Kate Moss, Jade Jagger and Helena Christensen, who modeled for Williamson in the early days of his career.
“Matthew Williamson” (Rizzoli) traces the designer’s career from an edgy young rebel who opted for peacock colors at a time when black was the height of fashion to an international name with standalone stores, men's and women's collections, and collaborations with H&M — and most recently Bulgari. The book is written by Colin McDowell, and features essays by industry figures including Anna Wintour, and Williamson’s friends, such as Miller.
“He’s evolved from colorful and fabulous to glamorous, colorful and fabulous,” said McKee, fashion and beauty director at Harrods, who added that Williamson’s evening wear in particular has been flying off racks at the store. “I am still wearing my first Matthew Williamson piece, which I bought years ago — a caftan with dragonflies on it. I treasure it.”
