“Electrifying.” “The biggest star in America.” “A giant miracle puppet.” That's how the paper described Elvis Presley — wearing a white jumpsuit “with a Belafonte neckline,” white boots and “a sash sliding down his hips” — during a 1970 Las Vegas concert at the International Hotel. This was a revamped Presley — the paunch was gone; the hip-grinding, spectacularly back. “He works straight from the crotch, bumping his way shamelessly he crouches with legs spread to the audience,” WWD noted on February 20. “He does the world’s best white boogaloo.” And while the singer’s manager banned all photography of Presley in costume or on stage, the paper managed to print a whole series from the show, which “were taken with all the secrecy and trenchcoats of a spy movie.”
