It seems a diamond isn’t always forever. A pair of Imperial topaz, ruby and diamond JAR ear pendants that once belonged to Ellen Barkin are on the block again as part of Christie’s upcoming “Jewels: The New York Sale” on Oct. 20. (The earrings originally sold in its Ellen Barkin Collection sale four years ago.)

Specially designed for Barkin by JAR’s Joel Rosenthal, the earrings are comprised of an elongated oval-cut Imperial topaz stone surrounded by circular-cut diamonds and ruby clusters, with a diamond-set link. The pair has French assay and maker’s marks and comes in a JAR pink leather fitted case. Barkin wore them to a 2005 Vanity Fair Oscars party.

The earrings were part of a group of 17 JAR designs in the original Barkin sale and, though estimated at $60,000 to $80,000, they went for $710,400 (Barkin’s collection brought in more than $20 million). They are the first of Barkin’s JAR items to resurface at auction.

And this time, they will be listed in the Christie’s catalogue with a current — and arguably conservative — estimate of $300,000 to $500,000.

The owner, a private American collector, chose to part with these stunners now due to a change in lifestyle and a streamlining of her personal collection. Makes you wonder what she’s keeping.
