NEW YORK — Save for Cher’s Bob Mackie moment, Björk’s swan and perhaps Sharon Stone in Gap, fashion rebels have been largely absent from the red carpet, but if the 10 CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund finalists have their way, that would change this awards season. As part of a L’Oréal Paris-sponsored design challenge in the run-up to the Fashion Fund gala dinner next month, they were asked to create clothes for red-carpet rebels. On Thursday night during a cocktail party at Anna Wintour’s town house, the group unveiled their designs on hand-picked muses, who seemed to revel in the idea of subverting red-carpet norms.
“It takes bravery, confidence and you have to feel comfortable,” said Solange Knowles, in a mixed print look by Suno’s Erin Beatty and Max Osterweis.
Karlie Kloss showed some skin in a sleek gold dress by Cushnie et Ochs’ Carly Cushnie and Michelle Ochs, while Lily Kwong, a cousin of Joseph Altuzarra, wore a tropical print T-shirt, skirt and coat by the designer.
“So you can wear each piece separately beyond the red carpet,” Altuzarra explained.
Those on hand to toast the finalists and their work included Georgina Chapman and Keren Craig, Tory Burch, Derek Lam, Phillip Lim, Jason Wu, Peter Som, Thom Browne, Prabal Gurung, Billy Reid, Zac Posen, Jenna Lyons, Reed Krakoff, Marcus Wainwright and David Neville, and Andrew Rosen. They were joined by Crystal Renn, Marina Rust, Lauren DuPont, Maggie Betts, Shala Monroque, and actors Jack Huston and Giles Matthey, who served as the night’s muses for Carlos Campos and Antonio Azzuolo, respectively.
Michael Kors had his own ideas on how to stand out on the red carpet.
“Don’t wear a mermaid dress in a jewel tone,” he said. “Wear a pair of pants, something short, or flat shoes. And don’t borrow jewelry or a dress.”
Elettra Wiedemann decided to wear a dress she found in a vintage store for the occasion.
“It doesn’t even have a label,” she said.
Now there’s a true rebel.
