"Design Like You Give a Damn" was coined by Architecture for Humanity, but that pretty much was the mantra for Cooper-Hewitt’s National Design Awards Thursday night.

With Wall Street in shreds and voters eager to welcome a new president, designers, architects and other creative types attending the gala trumpeted their respective disciplines and challenged each other to make a difference.

Some of the winners included Ralph Rucci for fashion, Tom Kundig for architecture, Michael Bierut for Design Mind, Scott Stowell for communication design and David Rockwell for interior design.

Edward Hopper, Norman Lear, Parker Posey, Martha Stewart, Massimo and Leila Vignelli and Zac Posen were among the guests at the Target-backed bash that raised $1.7 million for the Upper East Side Museum.

Massimo Vignelli, who has been busy redesigning New York City subway maps among other things, said, “A tight economy is always good for design. When the economy is down, we need designers to make things that work and are
styled better than a lot of things that are just around.”
