Paris Fashion Week Draws to a Close

Paris Fashion Week concluded with several strong spring collections, ranging from the fantastical to the smartly understated, with a few surprises thrown in. Reactions from retailers were positive, as they welcomed more realistic pricing, as well as the shift from aggressive power dressing toward more salable feminine designs. For his Louis Vuitton collection, Marc Jacobs went for head-to-toe overstatement with street-smart clothes that mixed athletic, military, street, hippie, Eighties and Davy Crockett influences. Karl Lagerfeld celebrated country life with wit, audacity and loads of style in his Chanel collection. Alexander McQueen was inspired by the ocean and evolution, while Stella McCartney showed that she has come to connect with women who appreciate her clothes’ unfettered chic and workability. On the other end of the spectrum was the Emanuel Ungaro collection, a collaboration between Lindsay Lohan, the house’s “artistic adviser,” and designer Estrella Archs. Uniqlo Helps Lift Fast Retailing Profits

Fast Retailing Co. Ltd. posted another year of double-digit growth as its Uniqlo brand continued to win over price-sensitive consumers. The picture was less rosy for loss-making French Connection Group plc, which said it would close its 21 stores in Japan over the next six to nine months, and Gianni Versace SpA announced it would take a break from the Japanese market.

Liz Claiborne Goes Exclusive to Penney’s, QVC

Liz Claiborne, as well as the Claiborne men’s label, will be sold exclusively by J.C. Penney Co. Inc. beginning next fall under a 10-year licensing deal that gives the retailer the right to buy the entire brand name from Liz Claiborne Inc. after five years. Meanwhile, the more fashion-oriented Isaac Mizrahi-designed Liz Claiborne New York line will be sold exclusively through QVC and Claiborne’s 93 outlet stores. Claiborne will provide brand management oversight as QVC arranges production and Mizrahi handles design. Also, Macy’s Inc. confirmed it has forged a strategic alliance with Ellen Tracy owner Brand Matter LLC and its sportswear licensee, RVC Enterprises, to become the exclusive department store retailer of Ellen Tracy better women’s sportswear, beginning in the spring.

Closing Four Titles, Condé Nast Reshapes in New Era

Reeling from an unprecedented downturn in advertising revenue, declining newsstand sales and growing competition from the Internet, magazine publishers are reshaping for the new era — and are expected to unveil their strategies in the coming months as they prep their businesses for 2010. On Monday, Condé Nast revealed plans to close Gourmet, Cookie, Modern Bride and Elegant Bride magazines. The following day, Details publisher Steven Deluca was pushed out as the men’s title was moved under the purview of senior vice president and publishing director Bill Wackermann. Also, former Gourmet editor in chief Ruth Reichl broke her silence about the magazine’s shuttering. Meanwhile, staffers at Time Inc. are bracing for another round of job cuts to occur before Christmas.

Lacroix Inks Deal With Ajman Sheikh

Workers at Christian Lacroix, which is in administration, breathed a sigh of relief as Al Hassan Bin Ali Al Nuaimi made a formal offer to purchase the troubled couture house. Meanwhile, Yohji Yamamoto Inc. has filed for bankruptcy protection, and Japanese investment company Integral Corp. said it will finance the fashion house’s restructuring efforts.

Jimmy Choo Enters Scent Deal With Inter Parfums

Jimmy Choo has stepped into a new fragrance venture with Inter Parfums SA, which goes into effect Jan. 1. The deal involves the creation, development and distribution of Jimmy Choo scents by Inter Parfums SA, which is Inter Parfums Inc.’s Paris-based affiliate.

Phillip Lim Staking His Ground in Seoul

Phillip Lim has set his sights on Seoul, and his new store there is designed to make shoppers take a closer look. Through a partnership with Shinsegae International Co., the designer will open a futuristic-looking 3.1 Phillip Lim boutique Oct. 16 in the Cheongdam Dong district — the first unit in South Korea.

Princely Behavior: Front Row at Yves Saint Laurent

Stefano Pilati wasn’t the only designer getting attention at the Yves Saint Laurent runway show. “It’s mine, I designed it,” said Prince, in a spangled suit with a bold gold necklace nesting in his chest hair. The rock star headlined a strong VIP turnout, which also included Virginie Ledoyen in a snug black leather dress — “It doesn’t look like it, but it’s really comfortable,” she assured — and a posse of models including Yasmin Le Bon, Claudia Schiffer and Kate Moss.

Irving Penn Dies at 92

Irving Penn, the master photographer whose fashion images in Vogue magazine for more than six decades bridged the gap between commercial photography and fine art, died Wednesday at his home in New York City. He was 92. (Click to see all the images.)

WWD Back in Time: Barbra Streisand at 21

Barbra Streisand’s ultraexclusive one-night engagement at the Village Vanguard last month got us reminiscing about our October 1963 interview (and impromptu photo shoot) with the then-21-year-old diva in her new, unfurnished Upper West Side apartment. Streisand was preparing to play Fanny Brice in “Funny Girl” on Broadway beginning in February. (Click to see all the images.)
