“The inspiration is Amish girls who secretly listen to disco,” said makeup artist Sam Bryant, who was working backstage at Richard Nicoll with MAC Cosmetics. She added her brief was to create a makeup look that blended naïveté with a hint of rebellion.

Models’ faces were smoothed with Face and Body foundation to give a moist and milky base before Cream Color Base in Nude was applied to the cheeks to create a fleshy, girlish glow. Gently disheveled eyebrows were subtly streaked with eyebrow pencil in Spiked. Lips, which were meant to convey youthful innocence, were patted with Tinted Lip Glass in a rich purple hue dubbed Desire to give the impression of a juice-stained mouth.

“Imagine a girl let loose with her mom’s curling tongs for the first time, then you’ll get the look we’re going for,” said hairstylist James Rowe, who worked on behalf of L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.art at the show. Rowe worked Tecni.art Color Show Volume Mousse into hair when blow-drying and added Pli to create texture before backcombing. Hair was then parted low on one side and tonged at the front to create a seemingly awkward bend as if the model had styled her hair herself.
