Memories of the 1977 Opium party aboard the Peking lingered over the glistening surface of the Hudson River Sunday night as Diane von Furstenberg and Barry Diller used their 305-foot yacht, EOS, to launch her new fragrance, Diane, in a fashion regal enough to make an oil sheik envious.
As she held court in one of the opulent rooms aboard the mega yacht — said to be the largest private sailing yacht in the world — von Furstenberg, clad in an orange sequined tank dress, thanked her husband for throwing the party: “Barry doesn’t like to have one person on the boat and we have dozens tonight,” she said of the evening, which welcomed 85 guests aboard. And a generous von Furstenberg offered a repeat visit to whomever could correctly predict how long it would take the ice-sculpture replica of her fragrance bottle to melt.
During the two-hour cruise, barefoot guests (no shoes allowed on EOS — Manolos and maritime don’t mix) sipped champagne, Sancerre and soda and sailed near the Statue of Liberty, as the couple’s dog Shannon patrolled, looking for table scraps.
“Perfume is punctuation — it’s about memory and addiction,” said von Furstenberg, noting that her new scent has notes of frangipani and violet. “They are the yin and the yang of the scent,” she said.
Admiral Barry, outfitted for the occasion in a striped top and nautical white trousers, dutifully took the dog for a walk when the ship docked.
