Baby Phat RTW Fall 2009 Beauty

The new First Lady, Michelle Obama, provided inspiration for both the hair and makeup at Kimora Lee Simmons' Baby Phat/KLS show Tuesday night.

"Michelle is so iconic and classic — she wears makeup and wears it well," said James Kaliardos, working for MAC Cosmetics at the show. "We were aiming for a take on classic beauty." Kaliardos started with MAC Studio Sculpt foundation, adding a hint of Pink Swoon blush at the top of the cheekbones.

Next, he turned his attention to the eyes. Kaliardos used a sweep of Drizzle Gold eye shadow across the lids, adding cocoa shadow on the brow bone to "subtly separate the lid from the brow bone," he explained. Next, he added a hint of gold glitter on the inside corner of the eye for radiance and swept a very light coating of glitter across the lids to catch runway lights.

"It's very subtle under the lights," he said. "From far away, you just see a little extra light." He also added individual false lashes for a natural, yet filled-out effect. Lots of black Zoom Lash mascara finished the eyes, and lips were kept simple with MAC Lipglass in Partial to Pink.

Odile Gilbert turned up the volume on hair, teasing hair to almost unbelievable heights and pinning in places so that the total effect was that of a very volumized cut falling somewhere between the chin and shoulders.

"It's teased, curly and sexy," said Gilbert. "The method is tease, curl, tease some more, and finish with tons of hair spray." — Julie Naughton
