Urban Outfitters Sees Strong Profits

Net rises 44.9 percent in quarter.

Urban Outfitters Inc. continued on its growth tear in the first quarter.

Earnings shot up 44.9 percent to $42.6 million, or 25 cents a diluted share, as sales increased 25.4 percent to $394.3 million for the three months ended April 30.

By division, sales at Urban Outfitters advanced 23 percent to $159.8 million, as Anthropologie’s top line rose 22.8 percent to $145.6 million and Free People increased 117.8 percent to $5.9 million.

The firm, which currently operates 257 stores, opened 12 new doors in the first quarter and plans to cut the ribbon on a total of 45 locations this fiscal year.
